waste-free bento lunch: for my new 3rd grader

I have a 3rd grader? How did that happen?!! It really doesn't seem that long ago that I was making Ethan's very first ever school lunches for Kindergarten!
So, my kids went back to school today! Well, my two big boys did anyway. My daughter starts preschool tomorrow. :)

The first day of school was also our first day of using this new box. I ordered it later than I meant to and I really wasn't sure it was going to arrive in time, but it did, just barely! I haven't had any time to really check it out and see how it's going to pan out for us. I don't usually send new containers to school without having the kids use it at home or with me on outings a few times first so I can catch any issues that could be a problem at school. But Ethan begged to use it. Fingers crossed all goes well! I'll tell you more about it after I have some more time to play with it. :)

1st day of 3rd grade lunch

Working from the top left and going clockwise:
* baby carrots and cheddar cheese (small piece of barran separates them)
* grapes on swizzle sticks (so glad to see they fit in that spot, I wasn't sure they would!)
* mini saltine crackers, granola bar, cereal bar
* raspberries
* semi-sweet chocolate chips in the tiny middle treat section

He also took milk in a Thermos Funtainer cup - those things insulate so well!

Still shaking my head in disbelief that I have a third grader. Gosh, time really does fly!!

When are all of you going back to school?

That is a really nice box; Very modern. My little one starts August 30th. They really do grow up so fast! I start to tear up even thinking about orientation and meeting the teacher. I'm such a sap and I'm sure I'll be taking the camera with me and a box of tissue.

Again, thank you for the opportunity to win todays give-a-way! I hope you received my email I look forward to putting those Lunch Punch sandwich cutters to work! :-)

My daughter started kindergarten Monday. We have made a bento lunch every day with zero waste thanks to you and your site! I bought 2 lock and locks and a sassy box. Yesterday she had broccoli and cheese pasta salad with a pink giraffe pick in a big section where I took the 2 containers out of the lock and lock. In the smaller sections she had orange slices and in the other whole grain wheat crackers and cheese flowers with carrot centers. I laid a pocky on top of the whole thing< packed a thermos of water and everything came home completely empty! yay!

My girlie girl starts 3rd grade next Thursday but it is only half a day. Friday will be the 1st full day. I am still scoping out great boxes but have been practicing my bento skills on her for the past couple of weeks. We are so looking forward to not buying school lunches this year. Thank You for your great site.

I'm so excited to hear about all of your bento packing, guys! Yay!! :)

Cher - the mini-saltines are Premium brand. My store stocks them right next to the oyster crackers.

MenuMom & Angie Spiker - it's a PlanetBox, only sold on their own website.

Melissa! I found your blog through Just A Girl. I'm not sure if you are the one I used to follow on flickr, the lunches for Ethan that inspired me to create amazing lunches for my food allergic daughter. We are also starting 3rd grade in 2 weeks! I love this lunchbox, will have to order a set for her. Can't wait to see what you have up your sleeve this year:)
