bento snack: lions and a biscuit

Tuesday tidings, everyone! :)

On-the-go snack bento for my preschooler:
lion biscuit snack

This snack bento contains a big strawberry, mini silicone cup of raisins and a lion animal cookie on top help keeps them contained. Also a stuffed biscuit, Babybell cheese and mini ketchup bottle (for the biscuit).
I kept fussing around with the arrangement of this bento and was never happy with how it looked. I finally gave up, stuck that lion pick in the biscuit and called it fine. Oh, and there is a little sesame crisp tucked in back. I had bought a tiny pack of those crisps ahead of time to use in the "seeds, plants, & flowers" MTM assignment a couple months ago and they got lost in the pantry. I totally forgot I had them!

The little biscuit is stuffed with ham and cheese - such a fun little lunch idea I found on Susan Yeun's bento blog. Hers look much nicer, mine were left in the oven a minute or two too long and were over-browned!
This is an idea I'm going to be playing around with. I'd like to try making the biscuit portion from scratch. While the canned dough is sooooooo easy and fast to work with, there were some items in the ingredient list I wasn't happy to see. They started with the words "partially hydrogenated". Blech.
I'll let you know how my experiments go. I'm concerned from-scratch dough is going to puff up too much....

oh...if you manage to find a recipe from scratch for the biscuits, will you post it on here? i don't think i can get the canned stuff anyway...despite the yucky ingredient!! they look so cute though, i too saw them in susan yuens blog. also are they soft or hard in the middle? just wondering! lol! love your blog!!

I'll definitely post the recipe if I can get them to turn out okay! The filling was soft, but the biscuit is pretty firm...I don't know how much my over-cooking them contributed to that though. And to be honest, I really have aversion to canned dough anyway. I don't mind the pizza dough occasionally (which doesn't have trans fats, so I wasn't expecting the others to), but I usually make all our baked goods from scratch, so the canned stuff just tastes off to me. It might taste just fine to someone else though. :)

P.S. - I saw a post a while ago (just figured out how to comment) about the dried out carrots. Just put them in a ziplock bag or container with water and they will be totally fresh again the next day.

i guess this makes a very healthy lunch snack for your kid, fruit combined with dry fuits and cake are a good and nutritious lot to eat during the day

I wonder if the stuffed biscuit thing would work with pizza dough (from scratch). I make it all of the time. It would be more like a mini-calzone, but it might work and without all of the extra ingredients.
