Besides Lego.com and PopTropica, one of my 8-year-old's favorite sites is this bento blog (I wonder how long that will last, LOL). He's been getting on my case about not having posted anything for a few days and suggested I make him a special bento for the 4th of July today. I confess I wasn't feeling very inspired. All I could think of was
the last stars and stripes bento I made the other week. Maybe that's why I ended up pulling out the panini maker again. ;-)
We've got the red, white & blue and stars & stripes covered, so I suppose it was a success. :)
In the top section: grilled cheese panini cut into stars, frozen blueberries and sunflower kernels.
In the bottom section: strawberries and pickles.
This bento is packed in a
Sassy Box
with just one of the small inner dishes used (the pickle one!).

I love those little sandwiches! But I have one question, did you gut them before or after you grilled them? I always cut mine after and it never works!

melissa, your bentos are so great! you've inspired me to be a bit more creative with how i present my kids' lunches. last week my oldest was at a sports camp and we used a panda bento box for his snacks. it was a hit with him and the other kids. thanks for the inspiration!

How well do the frozen blueberries go over? I keep them for smoothies and have noticed you pack them often. Do your children eat them a little frozen or do they thaw and mush before being consumed?
Kris, my little girl looooooves blueberries and will eat them up any way she can get them. My oldest son, who is 8, likes them best when they are frozen. This last batch I bought I flash-froze as soon as I got them home. His favorite way is to eat them straight from the freezer. (He eats his peas the same way!) He's fine with them being thawed too, but doesn't care much for them unless they are really cold.

Hi daffodil! I cut them into stars after. It was not very easy to get the cutter through the back half of the toasted sandwich, but I think if I were to cut out the pieces prior to grilling that all of the insides would have oozed out!
