the Dark Side in a bento box

You might have seen that there are spiffy new Star Wars cookie cutters at Williams-Sonoma now. My friends have been all a-buzz over them for weeks. During my outing yesterday I picked up a set (happy birthday to me!).

Darth Vader in a bento box

I've seen cookies and little sandwiches made with these Star Wars cookie cutters ...and even ice cream sandwiches! I attempted to make little grilled cheese sandwiches out of them with mixed results (I must not have "the force"). This Darth Vader didn't turn out too badly. The Storm Trooper was about the same, but Yoda's facial details were lost in the grilling.
Packed in the bento were also some baby carrots, strawberries, kiwi and a honey stick. I thought the honey stick looked like Vader's light saber. ;-)

I have to say making the tiny grilled cheese sandwiches was a real pain. As I was finishing up I had wholly talked myself into NEVER making them again...but the look of delight on Ethan's face when he saw them was pretty priceless. He's got plans to have Boba Fett for lunch tomorrow. What have I gotten myself into?

On a side-note, I recently hauled out all my bento boxes from the depths below to take inventory (stand by for pics, lol). I came across this black one that I got over a year ago, back when Ichiban had an online store. This box was described as a "mens medium" and the description said it was a good size for a man's lunch. I ordered it to use for my husband. I was aghast when it arrived and it was sooooo small. Littler than the lunch boxes I used for my kids! It seemed like an appropriate choice to use for today's Star Wars bento, though. :)

This lunch is cool! I totally got that was a light saber before I read that it was.

I just recently started following your blog and I love it! Thanks for the great ideas. You must be the coolest mom in the neighborhood!

Oh God! So COOL! I've been trying to resist the Star Wars cookie cutters, but I've seen so many cute things now that my resistance is wearing down. (I'm going to try to avoid a "come to the dark side" joke now.) And I love the light saber, of course.

WOoo for Star Wars lunches! Amusingly enough, this is the EXACT bento box I packed Kidlet's SW sandwiches in!

Grilled cheese is brilliant, I am adding that to my list of things to turn in to SW shapes.

awesome lunch.. I can't wait to see your entire collection.. When you pack grill cheese, do you make it the night before or do you need to make it in the morning before the kids head to school?

Hi Sandy! Good question - my kids are already on summer vacation, and this was made for a backyard picnic. ;-) I do cool the sandwiches on a cooling rack before putting in the box, but this particular one never had a lid on it so no moisture to worry about. With the past paninis I've made those were cooled completely before being packed. Making them the night before WOULD be good...I'm woefully terrible about doing lunches the night before though. If I manage to get the fruit cut the night before I'm doing good. I usually do everything in the morning.

Melissa, you are good.. I wish I could make lunch in the morning but my son and husband leaves the house at 630 and there is no time in the morning for me to make lunches for them... My son loves grill cheese so I'm trying to see if I can pack that for his school lunch.

Oof! 6:30! Ouch. My boys are out the door around 8, so it's not too bad. I am *so* NOT a morning person, so it really would behoove me to prep lunches the night before, but I am just so dog tired at the end of the day I don't want to mess around in the kitchen any longer than absolutely necessary!
