My little lady had a lunch of pasta salad (rotini pasta, italian dressing, parmesan and peas) topped with an octopus shaped kosher hotdog and a string cheese mozzarella stick in an EasyLunchboxes container.
To make the octo-dog you simply cut the hotdog about 3/4 to the end into "tentacles" and then boil for a minute or so and the legs curl up like tentacles. The same technique is used for the cheese stick, but don't do the boiling water step. ;-) The octodog face was made with a toothpick prior to boiling and I used a food safe marker on the mozzadog (or octoella?), which I promptly smeared as soon as I tried positioning it in the lunch.

In the two smaller sections are sea-stars of cucumber & carrots, made by using two sizes of star-shaped mini-cutters and clementine oranges with raspberries.
Sausages, or "weiners" as I see them called most often, are very popular in Japanese bento boxes. They even make special tools just for making hotdog shapes! They sort of make me laugh and gag a little at the same time. ;-)

I love this one. I have been lurking for a week or so and have to say this is one of my favorite. I need to try a few of your tricks.
I was trying really hard to figure out the white octopus and was feeling a little disturbed...I am very relieved to read it is cheese! hehe :D Looks like a fun and tasty lunch!
I think you could have started with "Two octopus guys walked into a bar..." ;) What a fun bento. Maggie and Annie are here and say that you get an A+.
You are truly a food artist. I don't know how you can keep coming up with new ideas but you do. And they are wonderful!
Thanks for the nice comments! :) I have to admit though, my little girl was very apprehensive when she saw her food today. It didn't get the warm reception from her I had hoped for. ;-)
I agree, laugh AND gag. Weiner shapers. Sigh. Shiver!
Why haven't I ever thought of the cheese idea? That's just lunch genius.
I think this is my favorite bento, and the cutest! Love the idea!
I so appreciate your creativity and inspiring me to make my kids' lunches fun. thank you
I LOVE your lunch ideas! VERY creative and fun! The kindergarteners that I teach would love your lunches!
Ok Melissa, I just have to ask... Do the kosher hotdogs taste like the so horrible I can't even believe I ever ate them ones. I tried organic ones once and it was the worst thing I ever ate.
I don't actually care for hotdogs much, EXCEPT for the kosher or all-beef Angus ones! They taste like real meat (to me) whereas I can't choke down a "regular" hotdog...they remind me of bologna, which I haven't liked since I was five or so. LOL
I'm pretty picky myself though, to be honest. :)
I bought them today so I am hoping. Also, how about my boys both picked out lunches from your blog for me to copy this week. I have my work cut out for me. Check out my blog to see if I do any justice whatsoever. :)
