good day, Goodbyn

It was a Goodbyn lunch day for my 8-year-old.

goodbyn bento 3-18

On the left side he has bear crackers, popcorn, and a cereal bar.
In the middle is ice water and baby carrots.
The large compartment on the right has 4 fruit kabobs, two with strawberries and two with grapes (a small segment of mini-ice packs are under them).

It occurred to me when I was cropping this photo to be uploaded that my son is pretty much a vegetarian at school. And actually, from the time he was very young, I always suspected that at some point he WOULD become a vegetarian. He has never cared for meat, not ever. However, as he's aged we've come across a couple meats that he does like:  chicken, ground beef in spaghetti (as long as it is in tiny pieces), ground beef (heavily seasoned) in tacos or enchiladas, and pepperoni (if it's on pizza). That's it, and even then, he eats it in extreme moderation.  And he's very temperature-picky when it comes to it. Everything needs to be warm. Which is a pity when it comes to the chicken, especially, because I think if he could get past his temperature issues, grilled chicken would be a nice addition to his lunches (we have discussed warming it in a thermos, but he's not interested). I still wouldn't be surprised if he eschews meat altogether in the future though, honestly.

What he lacks in the meat department he makes up for in the fruit aisle. This boy could eat his weight in fruit every day. ;-)

Hi Melissa, I just found your blog today and I gotta say I'm inspired and impressed. I'm pregnant with my first and I love what you are able to do for your kids. I honestly feel like I could maybe make this kind of thing for my future little one(s?) and I'm even considering trying this out for my own lunch, since I brown bag it.

Anyway, just saying thank you for this terrific blog!

Senorita ... the other day I was packing up leftovers and put some together in a container to take for lunch. Lo and behold without forethought I arranged it like a bento!!! I should have taken a picture. On the right was a mound of angel hair pasta with a good-sized dollop of homemade sauce. On the left were two slices of homemade wheat bread with whole garlic cloves. I immediately thought of you! Impressed? :)

I forgot to say what I was going to say which was directly related to this post ... "Good on ya, Ethan!" Who needs meat anyway? I'd go all fruit, too.

(small side note - I do eat some meat but could live without it)

Hello Laura, welcome and thank you! :) You can surely do this with your little one, in due time of course! :) My baby is 10 months old and I'm already looking forward to bento-ing for him in the future. If current behavior is any indication, I think I have another really good eater on my hands with him. :)

Jayne, I still have a hard time thinking of you as not being a veg any more! Though I remember dinner at your house one night and your dad made the MOST delicious chicken evah. I'd have a really hard time staying away from the meat in that case too. :P

Hello :) I'm LOVING your ideas for the goodbyn!! I tried to pin these onto my boards, but it won't pin the picture of the lunches in the goodbyn :( Am I doing something wrong? Thanks for your help :)

Angel, you are the second person who has commented about having trouble pinning, but when I just tried to pin and it worked just fine. I tried doing it with the "Pin It" toolbar thing and also with the "Pin it" button at the bottom of a post and it worked both ways. I'm not sure what's happening on your end. Does the picture not come up for you or are you getting a message of some kind?
